Ena’s Little Black Book on Photo Tours Bulgaria – Presiyan Petkov, the rose fields, the elderflower soda, and the guide who turned a lost camera into a story.
I arrived in Bulgaria for a photography trip without a camera.
I had left my entire camera bag on the plane in Vienna. By the time I realized and ran back, there was no getting it off the aircraft. So I did the only sensible thing: got on my flight to Sofia without it.
Presiyan’s response? He handed me his camera.
For the next several days, he shared not only his camera but his Bulgaria with us. He timed our visit to fields of Damask roses for beautiful light, pulled over for random patches of wildflowers simply because they were worth photographing, and knew when to change plans because the weather demanded it. He let me fly his drone and later sent me the files. When the trip ended, he simply handed me his SD card so I would have every photograph I had taken.
But Presiyan somehow made the trip work for everyone. There was photography for those of us determined to chase the light, endless patience for those who wanted to shop, cats whenever they appeared, fabulous local food, and even an entire case of elderflower soda after he discovered how much we loved it.

Somewhere between rose fields, photographs, meals, conversations and elderflower soda, our guide became our friend.
If you are heading to Bulgaria, go with Presiyan. Photographer or not, he’ll show you a Bulgaria you might never find on your own.
